Support early literacy and fine motor development with this engaging, hands-on alphabet activity that gives young learners a multisensory way to explore letter formation. By rolling and shaping play dough directly onto each mat, children build the muscle memory and letter recognition skills that underpin confident writing.
Each mat presents both the uppercase and lowercase form of a letter alongside a colourful animal illustration and its corresponding word, combining letter formation practice with early vocabulary development. The full set covers all 26 letters of the alphabet (A–Z), with directional arrows on each letter guiding correct stroke formation from the very first use. The animal theme — from Ant and Bat through to Yak and Zebra — keeps young learners engaged and gives each letter a memorable, meaningful association.
What’s Included
A 26 page PDF containing 26 Alphabet Play-Dough Mats (A–Z) — One mat per letter of the alphabet, each presented in a consistent, child-friendly landscape format. Every mat displays the uppercase and lowercase letter in large outline form with directional stroke arrows, alongside a vibrant animal illustration and the animal’s name, supporting both letter formation and early word recognition simultaneously. The clear letter outlines are sized for little hands to fill with play dough, making each session tactile, visual, and kinesthetic all at once.
How to Use
Print and laminate the mats for repeated use across the school year, or use them as single-session printouts. Children roll play dough into ropes and press it into the letter outlines, following the directional arrows to practice correct stroke formation. Mats work equally well in a literacy center, as a fine motor warm-up activity, during morning work, or as a take-home activity. Use individual letters to consolidate specific sounds being taught, or work through the full alphabet sequentially as part of a structured phonics or handwriting programme.
