Ancient Sumer – Lower KS2 History

Explore one of the world’s earliest civilisations with this Lower KS2 History lesson on Ancient Sumer and Mesopotamia. Pupils investigate the big question “Why were the cities of Sumer important?”, building knowledge of Ur and Uruk, the Tigris and Euphrates, farming, trade, cuneiform writing, ziggurats and everyday Sumerian life.

The lesson uses a Fact or Fiction enquiry to encourage pupils not simply to recall information, but to talk, reason and explain why a statement is true or false.
