Being Kind | KS1 PSHE / Citizenship

Help KS1 pupils understand what kindness means, what it looks like in everyday life, and how their actions can affect other people with this ready-to-teach Being Kind lesson. Pupils explore kindness, respect, empathy and generosity before considering the difference between kind and unkind behaviour and how kindness makes both ourselves and others feel.

The lesson moves beyond simply telling children to “be kind”. Pupils discuss and identify practical acts of kindness, including helping a friend, giving compliments, listening carefully and including others. Importantly, kindness is also extended to the online world: pupils consider using kind words, thinking before sending a message, including others and telling a trusted adult when something online feels unkind.

Activities include kind-or-unkind sorting, Talk Partners, differentiated pupil tasks, True or False assessment, RAG self-assessment and a class kindness pledge. The lesson supports PSHE Relationships, Caring Friendships, Mental Wellbeing and Online Relationships, alongside spoken language, vocabulary and assessment for learning.

The PowerPoint is the main teaching resource, supported by the included Being Kind At A Glance A4 black-and-white printable. Pupils can use the illustrated sheet to revisit the lesson’s key ideas and vocabulary while colouring, making it useful for consolidation, display or taking home.

The lesson also includes teacher planning slides mapping its teaching sequence against Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, including questioning, modelling, guided practice, checking for understanding, scaffolding and spaced review.

NB. This lesson was designed and written by a teacher. The draft PowerPoint was made by Claude AI, the graphically enhanced version was then made by ChatGPT, and all editing was done by Copilot. Every stage was overseen, amended where necessary, and approved by a teacher. Total time approximately 3 hours.
