Children use a large lump of clay to first create a rough 4 sided pyramid shape. Then they cut out the cuboid layers, straighten them place them on top of each other. Next they add extra detail (if appropriate) like in the second image. Finally the pyramid, once dry, can be painted and even sprinkled with real sand. I recommend children place their model on a paper or polystyrene plate.
