Suspense, Secrets and the Unseen
Explore foreshadowing, withholding, restricted viewpoint and pacing. Use a suspense ladder to build tension around an unseen threat.
Villains, Monsters and Divided Identities
Investigate duality, repression and appearance versus reality. Create an ambiguous antagonist with a convincing motivation.
Revelation and the Gothic Turning Point
Plant clues, reinterpret symbolic objects and construct a revelation that changes the protagonist’s understanding and reverses the balance of power.
Writing and Perfecting Your Gothic Story
Bring the unit’s techniques together in an extended writing task, then refine the draft through six focused editing stations.
