This Year 4 reading unit uses a diary entry set at Hadrian’s Wall as an engaging historical text to develop key reading comprehension skills. Through an age-appropriate diary-style narrative, pupils explore life on the Roman frontier and gain insight into the experiences of those living and working along the wall. The unit explicitly teaches and practises vocabulary development, helping pupils understand new and topic-specific words in context. Pupils are supported to retrieve key details, make inferences about feelings, motives, and daily life, and predict what might happen next using evidence from the text. They are also taught to explain their answers clearly and summarise the main events and ideas from the diary entry. This unit encourages empathy, historical understanding, and confident engagement with both fiction and non-fiction-style texts while meeting Year 4 reading comprehension objectives.
