My dear Reader,

A single woman, a crowded racecourse, and the King’s horse charging towards her—was Emily Davison’s death a tragic accident or the ultimate sacrifice for women’s rights? This lesson takes students into one of the most dramatic and controversial moments of the suffrage movement.

Learning Outcomes:
LO 1: To understand the definition of the concept of “Martyr.”
LO 2: To explain what happened to Emily Davison.
LO 3: To evaluate whether she was a martyr or died accidentally.

Lesson Features:
All lessons follow the same coherent model, helping students understand where they are at in their learning. This lesson includes three differentiated tasks: the first two are group or class-assessed, while the final task is an individual writing piece matching the GCSE framework. This allows you to circulate the classroom and support one-to-one writing progress.

Homework, reading resources, task templates, an extension activity, and a quiz are included to stretch and assess learning. The resource is fully prepared as a slideshow and is ideal for Year 8 students towards the end of the year.
