ESL Speaking activity about global issues and disasters, such as earthquakes, famine, and floods.

PDF file to be projected or printed as handouts. Includes a series of images depicting natural disasters.

Lesson:
- With students, brainstorm natural disaster words students already know. Make sure the following words get covered: earthquake, flood, famine, landslide, avalanche, drought.
- Project the images on a screen or hand out printed copies. Students are to discuss each image addressing the questions what, when, where why and how. Depending on the level, this can be great practice of modals of certainty/probability.
- After the images, the next slide is an FCE style speaking task - a question with different ideas to discuss, followed by a follow-up question
- The final slide is a series of questions for further discussion about natural disasters in general
