The following Henry “Box” Brown package is intended for grades 3-6. It can be used after reading the story Henry’s Freedom Box, or used on its own, as informational pages are included.
Once purchased, you will have:
-An inference page (a picture of a box is provided, what could be in the box, where is it going, etc.
- 2 informational pages about Henry Brown
-Reading comprehension questions (encouraging critical thinking)
-Comparing and contrasting Henry’s life to our own life
-Writing activity 1: Continue Henry’s story…what happens after his box is delivered?
-Writing activity 2: Responding to 2 questions…If you could ask Henry Brown any question, what would it be and why? Pretend you are Nancy Brown, write Henry a letter explaining what happened to you.
-Adjectives: use adjectives to describe Henry’s box. What does it look like? What does it feel like? What does it smell like?
-Illustrate the escape: Brainstorm new ways Henry could have escaped. Illustrate it.
-16 question cards that can be used for test/quiz or used as task cards in a center.
