A single lesson PowerPoint that asks students work in groups to role-play one of Mao’s advisors and advise him on whether or not to join the Second United Front. Students are then asked to write about the effect of the Second United Front on Mao’s rise to power. The lesson can be used by anyone who wants to include China as part of their SL syllabus. Originally conceived as a formative writing assignment, the question could be used as a discussion prompt. Designed for use with an IB class, it could be easily adapted for a 9th or 10th grade class.
