International Women’s Day (IWD) has become a date to celebrate how far women have come in society, politics and in economics, while the political roots of the day mean strikes and protests are organised to raise awareness of continued inequality.

This Reading Comprehension handout explores the history, traditions and celebrations associated with IWD.

This activity is suitable for advanced to proficient ESL learners or native English speakers. After carefully reading the text, students are required to complete some comprehension exercises including:
