Introducing addition and subtraction of directed numbers using number patterns to complete torture squares and drawing conclusions. This is an investigative approach where it is hoped that students will find a rule or rules to add and subtract integers. Mixed exercise included and some 'decimal' ones. Should challenge some students, I hope. May be suitable for some KS4 students and top end of KS2. Answers are given but please check them as it is easy to make errors! If you find errors, please let me know so that I may correct them for the benefit of all!

A lovely resource tackling the very difficult topic of adding and subtracting negative numbers. This worksheet encourages students to use an iterative method to work out the values of such things as 4 + -1, by first looking at 4 + 2, 4 + 1, 4 + 0, and so on...
