This 8-page resource is taken from ‘Reading Between the Lines: A Student Help Book’ (at www.Litworks.com), designed to support students and teachers working towards English examinations (e.g. AP, IB and GCE Advanced Level) which have a close textual analysis content. It makes use in its later stages of the CAPS (Context, Audience, Purpose and Style) structure common to many such assessment frameworks.

It takes students through the first half of A Modest Proposal, focussing their attention by means of short writing tasks on significant details of the text and thereby building up a full understanding of what Swift is trying to achieve, how he is trying to achieve it, and how successful he has been.

The resource has been structured so that the study tasks can be undertaken by students working in groups – in a ‘workshop’ setting, with open discussion as appropriate – or individually.
