Mini Fantasy Writing Unit - Inspire Imaginations, Elevate Writing

Bring creative writing to life with this 12-lesson mini-fantasy unit, designed to ignite imagination and develop rich, expressive writing in your KS3 students.

Created to run alongside reading for pleasure (in my classroom, students explored Tyger by SF Said), this unit offers a compact yet powerful journey into fantasy worlds - giving students the tools and confidence to construct, edit, and craft their own fantasy story. Though originally taught to Year 7, the lessons are challenging and adaptable enough to stretch older students too.

Each lesson has been carefully designed to enhance colour imagery, descriptive detail, sentence variety, and punctuation for effect, while embedding a sense of collaboration and joy in creative writing. Mixed-ability classes are fully supported: scaffolds, models, and shared writing opportunities guide the less confident, while high-level analysis, ambitious vocabulary, and open creative challenges stretch the most able.

Across twelve immersive lessons, students:
