This lesson contains:

  • A starter to check previous learning. You can edit this to suit whatever you have previously taught.
  • A teacher-led introduction to the Romans leaving Britain and the impact of their absence on encouraging other groups to invade Britain. The students then find out about Vortigern and how he invited the Saxons over to help with invaders. There is a gap fill to complete on the worksheet to recap what the students learned.
  • A main task to then study the story of Vortigern and the Saxons. The students answer questions about the story and how it impact Britain.
  • An activity to study different reasons on the information sheet about why the Saxons chose to settle in England. The students separate them into push and pull factors.
  • A plenary to recap what the lesson taught the students.
