KS3 Whole-Class Reading – Spring 1 (Lessons 5–6)
Year Group: 7–8
Genre: Fiction (Horror)
Core Text: The Bewitching of Aveline Jones – Phil Hickes

Lessons 5 and 6 of the Spring 1 whole-class reading unit focus on how an author sets the scene and prepares the reader in a horror novel. Pupils study an extract from The Bewitching of Aveline Jones, exploring how language and vocabulary choices, including figurative language such as similes, metaphors and personification, are used to create atmosphere and tension.

Through guided reading, pupils examine how the author establishes setting and mood, considering what is suggested rather than explicitly stated. Targeted questioning supports pupils in developing inference skills, enabling them to draw conclusions based on evidence from the text. Contextual information about the author and the background of the novel helps pupils understand how genre conventions and authorial intent influence writing choices.

Structured discussion and oracy-based activities encourage pupils to share interpretations, identify interesting features of the extract and communicate ideas clearly using appropriate subject vocabulary. Pupils are also supported to summarise the text succinctly, both collaboratively and independently, consolidating comprehension and key ideas.

By the end of these lessons, pupils will:

  1. Understand how authors set scenes and create atmosphere in horror fiction
  2. Analyse how language and figurative techniques shape meaning
  3. Use inference to interpret implicit information
  4. Develop knowledge of the author and context of the novel
  5. Participate confidently in discussion and produce clear summaries
