This is a matching activity to look at the difference between squaring and halving. Each picture matches at least one expression and has a numerical answer. There are more expression cards than pictures and blanks for students to work out the answers (6 of 9 are given). It requires thinking! I make each set of cards on a different colour of paper (see picture) and then students can work by themselves or in pairs depending on how many sets you make.

This is a resource that I came across at a conference many years ago (the lady delivering the presentation said she didn't know where she had gotten it from) ie it's not my idea! The original was spread out over 3 pages and because the cards weren't next to each other, created a lot of extra cutting. If you know who originated it, please let me know so I can give them credit or if they don't want me to share it I will remove it.

A really nice activity looking at the difference between squaring and halving. I like how it has been linked with shapes, so students are able to see the difference in the two skills.
