Lecture 9: The Community

This lecture explores how community participation can strengthen the rehabilitation and long-term resilience of historic places. It examines participatory design methods used in restoration and adaptive reuse, with particular attention to understanding local needs and responding to the future aspirations of communities in vernacular contexts. Through the Earthen Architecture Programme in Mali and the establishment of a community cooperative in Misfat al-Abriyin, Oman, the lecture demonstrates how involving local communities can support more sustainable and meaningful approaches to heritage rehabilitation.
