1-Hour Lesson – Fully Interactive – Ready to Teach

Dear Colleague,

Imagine life on the American frontier — Native Americans forced onto reservations, their traditional lifestyle disrupted, and new laws and treaties reshaping their world forever.

This lesson is the nineteenth in a unit on the American West. It explores life on the reservations and the consequences of U.S. policies. Students will consolidate their knowledge of key events and apply it to exam-style questions through interactive tasks.

All lessons in this series follow a consistent structure, supporting coherent learning and helping students track their progress:

LO 1:To understand the acts and treaties that regulated the Indian territory.
LO 2: To evaluate how Indian lifestyle changed in reservations.
LO 3: To explain the change of lifestyle for Indians . 1830–1887

Learning Features:
Fully assessed tasks with opportunities for feedback
Extension activity for higher-achieving students
Resources provided at the end of the PowerPoint

This is a knowledge-rich lesson that can run for 1 hour; alternatively, it can be adapted across two sessions.

I have also created Lesson 20 on Little Crow’s War and a full unit covering Plains Indians, Settlers, Development of the Plains, Law and Order, and Law and Crime (24 lessons).
