Mozart was well known for playing games during his lifetime. This resource has taken this idea as an inspiration and students can now create a simple piece of music using a snakes and ladders style music board. The idea is simple.
Each student takes a dice and rolls it six times, writing down the numbers that they land on. These numbers then become the moves to make on the snakes and ladders board. Every time they land on a square they have to write down the musical idea in that box, onto the score on the sheet. Once they have done this six times they can then work out the note names and play the composition that they have created.
- To extend the composition you can also try getting the students to roll the dice 12 times.
- If there are no dice available then students can simply choose six numbers from 1-6.
- During the game, if a student gets to the end of the board before using all their numbers up, they can simply start again.
- If a student lands on a square with a snake or a ladder, they must proceed to the new square first before writing down the music they have landed on.
- If you want the game to take a little longer, get the students to choose numbers between 1-4 only. If you are using a dice then a 5 can be ‘miss a turn’ , and a 6 can be ‘shake again’.
The board also has an assessment section at the bottom of the page for teachers to use if they so desired.
