This resource is a PowerPoint presentation and worksheets that covers the Adaptations (4.7.1.4) information on the 2016 AQA Ecology specification.

Since there are lots of activities, I spent two lessons going through this PowerPoint with my class, however, you could just miss some out to condense it all into one lesson if you choose.

The basic structure of the lesson is as follows:

1) Starter- Differentiated Question Quadrant.

"-Choose a question from the question quadrant to answer.
- Don’t just choose the easiest. Challenge yourself.
- You have 2 minutes to answer this question as best as you can.
- At the end of the lesson you will have a chance to improve your answer to demonstrate the learning progress that you have made.
- Use the following information to help you to answer your chosen question."

2) Rearrange these sentences into the correct order activity.
3) Two video clips to show the students various behavioural and structural adaptations.
4) 'How does this adaptation help the organism to survive?'- Picture guessing activity.
5) Think-Pair-Share... What do these arctic animals have in common? Class discussion activity with PowerPoint information.
6) Think-Pair-Share... What do these desert animals have in common? Class discussion activity with PowerPoint information.
7) Three slides with pictures and information on explaining surface area to volume ratio.
8) Compare the adaptations of the arctic and desert fox activity.
9) Graded/differentiated practice exam question.
10) Two slides with pictures and information on explaining the adaptations of desert plants.
11) A research activity to find out information about some specific desert plant adaptation examples. The AQA textbooks and/or the internet can be used for this activity.
12) A slide with information explaining what extremophiles are.
13) A research activity to find out more information about extremophiles. The AQA textbooks and/or the internet can be used for this activity.
14) Plenary- Differentiated Question Quadrant.

"-Using a different coloured pen, go back to your answer from the start of the lesson.
-You have 5 minutes to add anything or make any changes to your original answer.
-You could always answer a higher grade if you are happy with your answer.
-Lets see what progress you have made!"

Also included are various worksheets that can be used to enhance to lesson:

1) Differentiated 'Question Quadrant' worksheet, with an information sheet to help the students to formulate their answers.
2) Differentiated 'Compare the adaptations of the arctic and desert fox' worksheets.
