An interview lesson needs to demonstrate how you can progress students and applying grammar skills in writing is a great way to do this! This writing lesson teaches children all about the use of apostrophes and allows them to demonstrate this in their writing. It has been used for observations and has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted.

Children will learn how to use apostrophes for possession (both singular and plural) and omission (e.g. do not = don’t). This one off lesson is great to use on its own or can easily be adapted to any topic. Children will complete a range of tasks both independently, in pairs and in groups, before going off and writing sentences about a topic - an example included is Bruce Bogtrotter’s movie scene from Matilda based on the book by Roald Dahl.

Files included:
★ Detailed lesson plan with starter, main input, activities, plenary and list of items needed
★ PowerPoint with 10 slides of explanations, examples and activities
★ Activity 1 worksheet (quick activity for possessive apostrophes)
★ Activity 2 worksheet (quick activity for apostrophes for omission)
★ Word Bank of Contracted Words (to guide lower ability pupils)
★ Activity 3 pictures (for independent writing)
★ Activity 4 quiz (to work in groups)
★ Extra hot worksheet and answers (for early finishers)

These activities can be altered to suit different timings, from 20 minutes to an hour. The lesson ends in an activity where children will explain their growth in knowledge from the beginning to end of the lesson to demonstrate progress.
