Understanding Puberty – A Thoughtful and Inclusive PSHE Lesson
TO LAST 45 MIN - 1H | 23 SLIDES

In this engaging and inclusive PSHE lesson, students will explore the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur during puberty. Designed to create a safe and respectful learning environment, the session encourages open discussion, promotes body confidence, and supports emotional wellbeing as young people navigate this transformative stage of life.

What the lesson includes:

  • A myth-busting true or false quiz to spark curiosity and challenge misconceptions
  • Clear, inclusive explanations of physical and emotional changes linked to puberty
  • Hygiene guidance for penis and vulva owners, presented in a non-gendered and respectful way
  • Pair and group discussion tasks on emotions, body image, and growing independence
  • A focus on LGBTQ+ inclusion, intersex awareness, and respecting faith backgrounds
  • Scenario-based activity: “What advice would you give a friend?” – promoting empathy and practical thinking
  • A list of trusted support organisations for mental health, puberty, and LGBTQ+ support

Pupils will be encouraged to:

  • Reflect on the emotional and physical aspects of puberty
  • Develop strategies to cope with mood swings, body changes, and peer pressure
  • Ask questions and seek support in a safe, non-judgemental environment
  • Challenge harmful stereotypes and assumptions around growing up

This lesson creates a positive and informed space for young people to explore what it means to grow and change—physically, emotionally, and socially.

Let’s inform, support, and empower students through meaningful and inclusive puberty education.
