Prior knowledge: ideally, be familiar with functions.
Students use Multilink cubes (or other snap-together shapes) to create the first few shapes in a sequence which grows in a predictable way.
Then they look at the number of cubes used and how this number grows each time, and finally see if they can create a function or equation to describe the number of cubes in any given shape number.
