My year 5 class really struggled to understand square and cube numbers and they cracked it using these resources.
You need to have multi link cubes for them to build cube statues, and square stickers for cube numbers.
Begin by discussing the first photo and seeing what mathematical facts they can draw out of it. (Angles, shapes, lengths, sizes, patterns etc)
Then let them into the context, demonstrate building each of the statues and paintings using the equipment as they go along.
Give each child a copy of the booklet and have them work through it. |It differentiates itself because children work through it at their own pace and stretch themselves as appropriate.
This was an observed lesson, and it was noted to be an example of outstanding teaching!
For my plenary I had them draw concentric squares demonstrating square numbers.
