The Odyssey – Teacher Description

The Odyssey is one of the greatest stories from ancient Greece. Written by the poet Homer around 2,700 years ago, it tells the adventures of the hero Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. Although the war has ended, his journey lasts another ten years because of storms, monsters, magic, and the anger of the sea god Poseidon.

During his travels, Odysseus encounters famous characters and creatures from Greek mythology, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the enchantress Circe, the Sirens, Scylla, Charybdis, and the nymph Calypso. His intelligence and determination help him survive many dangers.

Meanwhile, his faithful wife, Penelope, waits for him in Ithaca while cleverly delaying the many suitors who believe Odysseus will never return. Their son, Telemachus, also begins a journey to search for news of his father.

The Odyssey explores themes of courage, perseverance, loyalty, hospitality, family, and the importance of wisdom over strength. It remains one of the world’s most influential works of literature and has inspired countless books, films, and adaptations.
