This KS3 unit of study should take around 15 hours to complete. There is a Power Point included for every lesson which leads students through the activities and provides advice and guidance where required.

In teaching/loose chronological order, the lessons include:

  • King James I, witchcraft and science
  • The Gunpowder Plot
  • Causes of the English Civil War
  • Events of the civil war and Charles’ defeat
  • The execution of Charles I
  • Oliver Cromwell: Hero or Villian?
  • The Plague in London
  • The Great Fire of London, 1666

There are a great range of activities including discussion, speech writing, pamphlet making and formal assessments. The two formal assessments are the essay on the causes of the Civil War and a source investigation into Oliver Cromwell. Writing frames and mark schemes are included for these.
