This 14 lesson KS3 Poetry SoW (using the grading system of 1-9) aims to develop students knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of poetry. The scheme aims to build the skills required for analytical writing about poems required at GCSE and beyond.
The poetry cluster is called ‘Growing Pains’ and it focuses on issues surrounding children growing up. There are numerous opportunities for self/peer-assessment and also teacher formative and summative assessment opportunities throughout. In addition to this, model answers are provided using a WHY writing frame which means: WHAT has the writer done, HOW have they achieved this through language, WHY has the writer done this (effect on the reader).
The three poems within the cluster are: Welltread and In Mrs Tilscher’s Class by Carol Ann Duffy; Nettles by Vernon Scannell.
In the latter part of the SoW, students will complete a reading exam where they will have to analyse a poem - model answer provided. There is also a feed-forward lesson so students can complete dedicated improvement reflection time.
Finally, all resources needed are provided in this purchase: glossary of terms for lesson one, clean copy of the poems and annotated copies of poems.
