The lesson is a discovery of the formula for the volume of pyramids from a cube formed by pyramids constructed at the beginning of the lesson. The lesson aims to develop students' reasoning skills and shows how a formula can be demonstrated through a practical. More or less support in deriving the formula can be given, dependent on the ability of the class. A differentiated worksheet is also included moving from easier to more difficult problems. The calculation of the volume of the pyramid of Giza offers the opportunity of AfL with whiteboards. The video at the end of the lesson extends application of the formula into 3D Pythagoras Thm. The practical can be extended in a number of ways such as the exploration of the properties of nets.
