Make teaching the days of the week fun, meaningful and fully supported with this 2-week Year 1 writing unit, inspired by Today is Monday by Eric Carle. These editable lesson slides guide children through spelling the days of the week, writing simple sentences, recounting food choices, planning a narrative, and improving writing through structured editing tasks.

Across the unit, pupils explore each day of the week, learn why days need capital letters, practise sentence structure with capital letters, finger spaces and full stops, and use conjunctions such as ‘and’ and ‘because’ to extend their ideas. Children use sentence stems, shared writing examples, peer assessment checklists and vocabulary prompts to build confidence and independence.
