This 90-minute research lesson supports pupils in investigating current astronomical missions and discoveries while developing source-evaluation, note-making and scientific communication skills. Begin by modelling how to identify trustworthy and up-to-date sources, then guide pupils to select one investigation, complete the structured research planner and produce a concise five-paragraph summary. Encourage pupils to distinguish confirmed evidence from early or sensational claims, make explicit links to GCSE Astronomy topics, and share their findings during the plenary. Use the curated sources, sentence starters and focused checkpoints to support pupils who need additional structure, while challenging confident researchers to compare sources, evaluate uncertainty and identify unanswered questions.
