After trawling the internet for hours and finding that there was very little guidance on how to prepare Year 6 for the new 2017 SATS reading questions, I decided it was better to create my own help booklet to assist all pupils, teachers and teaching assistants. I referred to the content domain outlined in the KS2 English Reading Mark Scheme, used guidance from the CPG Reading SATS Booster Book 1, inputted my own personal teaching experience and created a booklet that explains exactly how to tackle every type of question. The contents of the booklet are as follows:

1. The 6 Golden Steps (How to approach each question in 6 steps.)
2. Question Starters (A list of question starters to help identify the 3 main type of questions asked.)
3. Types of Questions (An explanation of the 8 types of questions asked, followed by examples from the SAME fiction or Non-Fiction text (found in CGP Reading SATS Booster Book 1).
4. Points and Evidence (How to ensure the maximum marks awarded is achieved by applying Points and Evidence rules.)
5. Poetry (A small note about poetry, so pupils know what a poem is and what to expect from questions about this type of text.)
6. The 3 Step Rule (Guidance on how to work out the meaning of an unfamiliar word.)
7. Skimming and Scanning Techniques (Guidance on how to find the relevant information in the text as quickly as possible.)
8. Notes (A useful space for pupils to make notes of their own.)

I have structured all my lessons around my help booklet, in combination with the CGP Reading SATS Booster Book 1 and have so far found it to be successful. I hope you do too!
