These are 4 lessons that I did with my year 6 class using chapter 1,2 and 3 of The Secret Garden; this book has just the right amount of complex vocabulary to prepare your class for a potentially challenging text in the SATs. My class were finding answering the 3 mark questions particularly challenging. The first lesson involves reading chapter (you don’t have to finish it) and discussing Mary Lennox’s chilhood. We looked at the technique for answering 3 mark questions using Point, Evidence and Explain to answer a 3 mark question about her childhood. In the second lesson, we finished chapter 1 and read some of 2. We looked at answering the tricky ‘Yes’ ‘No’ ‘Maybe’ questions in the SATs where the children must properly explain and give their opinions to back up their choice. The third lesson is also based on chapter 2 and involves less teacher input and more questions involving skills they have learnt. It has a separate group of retrieval questions for your lower readers. The final lesson is on ‘impressions’ that certain words from chapter 3 can give the reader . Lesson 4 and 5 involve explanation to justify inferences and another ‘yes’ ‘no’ ‘maybe’ questions about Archibald Craven’s garden.

This is a lesson that I used to teach my year 6 class about converting between fraction, decimal and percentage equivalents . The lesson starts off with a starter on multiplying and dividing by 100. It then offers opportunities for teacher modelling. Next, there are slides with differentiated practice questions for the class to do on their whiteboards. The answers are on the next slides so that you can quickly check their work. On the penultimate slide, there is the Learning Objective and a challenge to complete once they’ve finished their work. Worksheets are differentiated for LAs, MAs, HAs and HHAs. I have included the answers for worksheets too to make teacher marking easier or for you to give to your class to mark their own work!

I gave this as reading homework to my year 6 class for three weeks -it is three comprehensions on chapter 1,2 and 3 of the book. The main reason was to encourage them to read the book (The Explorer) which I have in our class reading corner. The questions involved a variety of the reading skills that come up in SATs papers so good practise! I have included the answers for each question at the bottom of the page to make marking quicker. I have also included the text.

This is a lesson that I did with my year 6 class about the process of fossilisation (how fossils are formed) and how they are evidence towards species evolving and changing to adapt to their environment. The worksheet is differentiated for LA and another worksheet for MA and HA that involves explaining why fossils are so important and to link to evolution.

This is a unit of lessons that I did with my class in whole class guided reading lessons involving lots of SATs skills (e.g. the dreaded 3 mark questions!). Lessons are differentiated for LA, MA and HA and use the Viper skills. I usually encourage my class to circle the VIPER skills they think they were using that lesson. I took about three-four weeks to teach this. I had two lessons in my books each week and spent the other lessons reading the chapters which are sometimes quite long. It was a very good text to expose my class to more complicated language and prepare them so potentially a complicated SATs text.

Day 1 : revises names of shapes, regular and irregular shapes, parallel and perpendicular lines, conventional markings for parallel sides and equal angles and types of angles. The worksheet is differentiated 3 ways for LA, MA and HA. Day 2: properties of equilateral, right angle, isosceles and scalene triangles. The worksheet is differentiated 3 ways for LA, MA and HA.

These three lessons on the order of operations (made for my class when home learning) contain lots of differentiated practice questions . Each lesson has a slide with questions differentiated 3 ways for independent work after teaching. This can be printed off or they can work from the interactive whiteboard (if you want to save paper). I have included the answers so that you can get your class to self-mark or just to speed up your marking process (and save your valuable teacher time!).

Used on two consecutive days for my year 6 class that has a range of abilities. This lesson starts off with two opportunities to discuss the method of how to round numbers. The method I usually teach my class is to circle the place value column you are rounding to. For instance, if you are rounding 456 to the nearest ten , circle the 5. Then underline the number to its right and this will tell you whether you round up or down. The PowerPoint then moves onto differentiated practice questions (answers on next slide so you can check the children’s whiteboards quickly). The final slide has steps to success and a challange question for the class to complete when they have finished their work. The worksheets are differentiated five ways. Two possible options for your LAs (indicated by ), one option for your MAs () and two options for your HAs (). The answers are at the end in case you want your class to mark their own answers and save teacher time! The second lesson is what I did the next day with my class as some of my Middle Ability children still were not secure. I have moved the class onto to rounding larger numbers to the nearest ten thousand and one hundred thousand. The questions are on the slides this time and include answers.

This is an entire lesson on converting metric units of length, mass and capacity that I did with my year 6 class after a lesson on just conversion. There are lots of differentiated practice questions to complete on the whiteboards (with answers on next slide to quickly check). These are three lessons that I did with my year 6 class. Lesson 1: looks at finding the missing angle on a straight line and around a whole turn. On the PowerPoint, there is a printable worksheet which is differentiated for LA, MA and HA mathematicians. The answers are on the next slide. You could use these to get the class to self-mark and save your valuable teacher time! Lesson 2: revises learning from day before then moves onto finding the missing angles in triangles. My class had a basic knowledge of the features of an equilateral and isosceles prior to this but the lesson offers a brief opportunity to revise the features. On the PowerPoint, there is a printable worksheet which is differentiated for LA, MA and HA mathematicians. The answers are on the next slide. Lesson 3: this is a reasoning lesson during which I sent out my LAs to work with my TA on MA work from day before. The lesson looks at opposite angles and finding missing angles in diagrams that contain triangles. There is a Word document worksheet for MAs and HAs.

These are 3 whole lessons on Powerpoint that I used to do a lot of revision of the formal written method of with my y6 class last year (they needed the extra practice!). This is an entire two lessons on comparing fractions that I have used to teach my year 6 class. These are two lessons I did with my year 6 class on finding fractions of amounts. It has lots of visuals showing how to find fractions of amounts. They contain lots of animations because it was easier to teach my class online this way! There are lots of differentiated practice questions with the answers of the next slide. For independent work, there is a differentiated slide which can be printed as a worksheet or the pupils can work from the board (if you want to save paper!). While they are completing their independent work, you can display the slide with the challenge on it which they can complete when they’ve finished.
