Creating a setting: Hunger Games

(0)
This fully-differentiated lesson is based on creating a setting description using basic (some advanced) language techniques, including a summary of word classes. Based on the description of District 12, students are pushed to create their own dilapidated setting. Learning challenge and arrival activity (Introduce), fully differentiated with clear outcomes to show progress. Learning journey explained (easy to adapt) Low-stakes true or false quizzing on Chapter 1 of The Hunger Games (Assess) Discussion of setting and popular settings in children’s literature (Link) Identification of language techniques (Identify) Task One: Identify word classes and language devices- (see teacher’s copy for discussion points, great for feedback especially with a visualiser). Address gaps in knowledge before moving on. Task Two: Using previous task, create a run-down setting using stock images as a stimulus. (Create and Apply) Feedback: Snapshot of two memorable lines (Review) Plenary: Bronze-Silver-Gold differentiated questioning linked to outcomes (Assess, Review, Capture) Lesson plan available on request, feedback and tweaks would be hugely appreciated.

Exploring Villains (Gothic) in Literature

A lesson used to introduce the Gothic to a HA KS3 group. However, the document of character diamonds is the perfect diamond 9 for older groups as it references popular culture characters. Laminate the print out and cut them out, ask the students to order characters and think about what makes them popular.

A Midsummer Night's Dream- Magic

A highly engaging lesson aimed at a high-ability KS3 group. The lesson aims to make students think about the role of importance of magic in AMND, including an explanation of what a theme is. The final task is to begin to analyse a small extract in the play.

How to engage a reader and analyse language choice.

A two/three part lesson which has really helped my 7s/8s improve their writing style. It is based on science-fiction, but can easily be adapted for a range of literature or schemes of work. Is based on the PETER structure, but it could be adapted to whichever acronym you use.

Maya Angelou- Still I Rise- Extended Sequence

(1)
This sequence of lessons could last between three and five lessons depending on ability. It is easily adaptable, but is full of challenging and creative tasks to stretch and support a range of abilities. A great introduction to poetry and techniques, showing students how to annotate and structure a response also. It also analyses Still I Rise in great detail. This sequence has a lot of scaffolding, which can easily be removed for higher ability.

Gothic Openings

An easily adaptable resource designed for a HA Year 7 group, could be used for most of KS3 with slight tweaking. Print and cut the resources, stick them around the room or on different tables, giving students time to visit and make comments on each station. Differentiated success criteria. Proved to be very engaging and effective.
A Two/Three Part Lesson on Writing to Persuade: Transactional Writing (Year Nine and Ten mainly)

A Two/Three Part Lesson on Writing to Persuade: Transactional Writing (Year Nine and Ten mainly)

This is a fun set of lessons I designed recently to aid those on their Language Paper 2 Examination and general transactional writing. The lessons are designed to be engaging; the students will be scaffolded to writing a persuasive writing piece. It can easily be differentiated (I personally use Bronze, Silver and Gold for my class). Resources: I have included the Martin Luther King extract from ‘I Have A Dream’. This can easily be adapted to other speeches. Barack Obama, JFK and monologues from US Talk Shows are current but must be sensitively used. As for the video game research, I would recommend using five or six articles around the room. Use the most up to date articles you can and therefore print off according to the date of use. Interactive Elements: Check and adapt depending on software and model. Very easily adapted.
