Es el color de los vestidos de novia y de las sábanas del baúl de la esperanza que las hijas deben pasar su tiempo de luto cosiendo y bordando. También es el color de la limpieza. La casa nunca está lo suficientemente limpia para Bernarda. Ordena repetidamente al personal que vuelva a fregar todo, que blanquee el patio nuevamente y que limpie las huellas desordenadas dejadas por los extraños en la casa una y otra vez.
