About Formby High School
Who are we?
Formby High School is an 'Outstanding' (Ofsted, 2008) and heavily oversubscribed 11-19 mixed comprehensive academy with 1,170 students (including over 250 in the Sixth Form). The school’s mission statement “Determined to Achieve" is the central focus of all our work. The school employs over 120 dedicated and highly effective teaching and support staff who work closely with parents to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students. The school's Governors are very proud of the school and take a very keen interest in it's development. They work tirelessly to support the Headteacher and his leadership team, and are committed to recruiting and retaining the very best staff. Teachers are attracted to working at Formby High School as students are very well-motivated and behaved, there are plenty of opportunities to teach their subject to A Level and there are extensive CPD opportunities. Staff turnover is very low and those who leave usually do so as a result of career progression.
Where are we?
Located in leafy suburbs close to the centre of Formby village within the Sefton Local Authority of Merseyside, the school campus is conveniently placed for both rail and bus travel. Both Freshfield and Formby train stations are within a few minutes walk and the M57 / M58 motorways are just 10 minutes away. The National Trust Red Squirrel Reserve is a 10 minutes walk and the stunning Sefton coast and dunes system is just a little further. Southport (7 miles), Liverpool (15 miles), Preston (25 miles) and Manchester (40 miles) are all within commutable distance.
How are we doing?
Formby High School was judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2008. The school has maintained high standards of achievement, teaching, behaviour and attendance and, as such, has not been inspected since. The school is a specialist centre for the Creative Arts with a strong emphasis on Music, Dance, Drama and Art. Through the teaching of these specialist subjects, all students develop creative flair, confidence and enquiring minds that enhance their capacity to learn and enjoy. The school's excellence in the Arts and Sport has been recognised both regionally (Educate Award for Outstanding Sport in a Secondary School in November 2019) and nationally (TES Award for Creative School of the Year in June 2017). The curriculum and extra-curricular programme are broad and rich, giving every child the chance to excel. Pastoral care and building positive relationships are at the heart of all we do.
The school has a proud record of sustained academic excellence. Each year, the overwhelming majority of students achieve excellent GCSE results (including good passes in English and Mathematics), significantly exceeding national expectations. The school’s Sixth Form is inclusive and a wide range of A Level and BTEC courses are offered to students. The majority of students progress to higher education and many embark on degree courses at some of the country’s most prestigious universities, including Cambridge and Oxford.
Whilst the buildings are old they have been well-maintained. The school benefits from outstanding specialist teaching facilities as well as a purpose-built Sixth Form Centre (featuring four classrooms, two private study suites and the ‘Ozone’ coffee bar). Since converting to academy status in 2011, the school’s leadership and Governing Body has pursued an ambitious site improvement strategy. In the last four years the school has been awarded over £3 million capital funds and this money, alongside the school's own funds, has been spent to bring about significant enhancements to the teaching and learning environment, including classroom refurbishments, creation of additional Science laboratories and ICT suites, and the renovation of our Sports Centre, School Hall and dining area. During 2017/18, both ‘tower blocks’ have received a facelift as part of this extensive campus improvement programme. To complement the investment in infrastructure, a rolling programme of ICT enhancements is carefully managed to keep the school at the forefront of education technology.
Students at Formby High School follow a curriculum that is exciting, engaging and tailored to the needs of each individual; a curriculum that allows all students to leave with outstanding qualifications and the confidence and skills to pursue further study or enter the world of work. Our rewards system allows students to gain recognition for going ‘above and beyond’ the expected, both in and out of class, through homework, classwork, extra-curricular involvement, student leadership, attendance and punctuality and community service. All students are challenged to participate and excel in a wide range of ‘FHSxtra’ activities, including the performing arts, sport, community service and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. The range of school trips offered to students is diverse and includes sports tours to Spain and Barbados, field work to Cumbria and North Wales, historical and cultural visits across the UK and Europe, including Auschwitz, and science trips to the Eden Project and Cern, Switzerland.
