About Twickenham School

2016“When I said I thought this school could be outstanding many thought I was being overly ambitious but I am now even more convinced it is achievable"

“This is a school unrecognisable to the one I arrived at back in May 2016. Year 11 students are coming in before and after school, and during half term to improve their grades.” Headteacher Assal Ruse talking to the Richmond and Twickenham Times in February 2017.

Our History

Twickenham Academy is a highly ambitious mixed entry secondary school for pupils aged 11-16, situated in the heart of the community of Whitton in South West London.

The school recently joined with two high achieving local schools, Teddington School and Waldegrave (named Sunday Times Parent Power School of the Year 2016), as well as neighbouring Hampton High, to form the Richmond West Schools Partnership (RWST).

A Department of Education report carried out at the school in February this year found the school was rapidly improving under our new Headteacher Assal Ruse, a former deputy Headteacher at Waldegrave

They also found aspiration and expectation among pupils had been raised and that behaviour at the school had vastly improved.

GCSE 2017

The school has continued to improve exam results at GCSE year on year since new headteacher Assal Ruse took over.

With the tough new GCSE exams being introduced this year, an impressive 60 per cent of students gained the new 4+ Grade in English and Maths.

There was also an improvement to the highest marks with 14 per cent of grades A*-A while five equivalent A*-C grades was 55 per cent.

The average grades in English, Mathematics, Science, German, ICT, Dance, Sociology, Music, Art,  Product Design, French, Drama, History, Business and Computing are now C and above.

The number of students achieving the new top Grade of 9 in English and Maths was expected to be lower than previous years.

Nevertheless, Twickenham School this year produced three students - Daniel Clouter, Sidney Thomas and Ludmila Branda - who all attained the top grade for Maths.

Richmond West Schools Trust

The Trust is led by the Executive Headteachers of Teddington School and Waldegrave School, who know and understand what it means to lead high achieving schools.

As a Trust, we have the highest possible ambition for our schools and students.  There is a relentless focus on Teaching, Learning and Leadership and of shared expertise to ensure we are constantly striving for improvement. It is our belief that every child deserves a top-quality education. That is why we have made a commitment to our pupils and families that every one of our schools will be either Good or Outstanding by 2019.

Vision and Ethos

Each school in the Trust has its own distinct identity and ethos. They each have their own vision, values and mission statements. What unites is a commitment to providing a disciplined, safe and structured school environment which nurture a strong culture of learning.

We offer a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum with a strong focus on the acquisition of skills for learning, literacy, numeracy, social and cultural development, employment and citizenship.

Teachers, pupils and all staff at the Trust are challenged to reach high standards, mediocrity is never accepted.

The Trust is founded on a bedrock of strong leadership from governors, senior leaders, middle leaders, teachers and students alike.  It will be characterised by effective systems for tracking student progress, behaviour and attendance, and staff competency at all levels.

Development Plan

With the support of our partners in the RWST, the school has put in place a robust development plan to ensure rapid progress is made at the school.

Areas where the school has already seen development include pupil outcomes, personal development, behaviour and welfare, teaching and learning and leadership and management.

Building on last year’s 11 per cent spike in A* - C GCSE results, the school expects further improvement in the coming exams.

There are now opportunities through CPD for staff to recognise and understand the characteristics of outstanding learning, so that teacher planning facilitates exceptional progress.

Our Headteacher Ms Ruse has developed leadership and management across the school leading to greater accountability for progress, expectation of high achievement and quality of teaching and learning.

We have also introduced a whole school enrichment programme to excite and inspire learners to aim high and to support learning and engagement.
