Summarizing Reading, Writing and Research strategy pack

Summarizing is one of the key Reading Comprehension and Writing Strategies. If students can use the summarizing strategies of identifying keywords, recognizing the big idea and then writing a summary of what they have read, then that enables you to see how well the student comprehends the written text. This is an important research strategy as well, so at the same time you will be teaching your students valuable research skills. This activity pack is designed to help students to make sense of the summarizing strategy through informative posters and interesting activities. The Summarizing Reading Strategy Activity pack can be printed out, posters and some of the worksheets can be laminated, and worksheets printed and shared with students. As an added bonus, teachers and students who have (Google Apps for Education) Google accounts can click on the shared links and use the worksheets and Graphic Organizers in Google Slides.

Movie Guide: LIVING ON ONE DOLLAR

(1)
This 56 minute documentary on Netflix is the best thing I have seen this year for either a Spanish or Social Studies. 4 college students spend 56 days in a remote Guatemalan village on 1 dollar a day budget, while exploring effects of living in extreme poverty and some innovative solutions people have come up with to survive. Excellent for any Spanish class where you have been studying immigration and reasons people leave their home countries to risk their lives traveling to the US, or for a Social Studies class looking at underdeveloped countries and what it means to live in extreme poverty. My students loved this film bc it was created by four college students and used their observations and connections as narrative between interviews with people in the village. (Interviews are in Spanish with subtitles, narrative in English. ) Suitable for any level middle, high school, available on Netflix, this film was such a gem you will want to own a copy. Movie guide contains 29 questions.

When completed either within the email or in an internet browser (works perfectly on mobile devices) the evaluation from the class is sent directly back to you where a breakdown of the responses is built into the form. (responses - summary of responses). **UPDATE** Google form versions can be accessed through the word document. Each form only takes pupils a few minutes to fill out and are much quicker than traditional Red/amber/green self assessments. Ideally complete after the lesson is taught, at the beginning of any revision period and at the end of a revision session.
