KS3 lesson on The Big Bang Theory, made for an RE lesson, exploring if God could be responsible for it. Lesson begins by looking at three interpretations of the origin of the universe; literal, liberal and atheist. Then looks at what a theory is. Then goes into detail on what the Big Bang Theory is; who created it, how long ago they said it happened; evidence for it. Lesson includes a DART reading task. KS3 lesson on the Theory of Evolution. Lesson precedes others on the Christian origins of the universe and human kind. Lesson explores how Charles Darwin developed his theory, how he attributed this to human development and Natural Selection. Lesson then explores whether God could have caused evolution to happen. KS3 lesson on the concept of the soul. Lesson explores what a soul is defined as for religious and non-religious people, what people believe it is and does and what dualism and monism beliefs are about the soul. Lesson then looks at what someone may be like without a soul. Then finishes with Duncan MacDougals Soul experiment to test whether the soul is real and has weight. KS3 lesson (can be adapted to KS4) on the Birth of the Buddha and the Four Sights. Lesson explores the idea of prophecy, whether material goods can make you happy and how one ‘thing’ can change a person’s life. KS3 Lesson (can be adapted for KS4) on the Eight Fold Path; the Buddha’s solution to suffering. Lesson retrieves past learnt information on the Four Noble Truths, then students investigate the 8 parts of the path, exploring what it means and how a Buddhist can do it in practice. Then students evaluate how easy/difficult these are for a Buddhist to do; both individually and all at the same time. KS3 Lesson (can be adapted for KS4) on the Four Noble Truths in Buddhism. Lesson explores how the Buddha came up with these ideas, what the Truths are and looks to adapt the truths to every day ideas about Dukkha (suffering). Also looks at the 3 Poisons. KS3 Lesson (can be adapted for KS4) on the Five Moral Precepts in Buddhism. Students should be already covered the 4 Noble Truths and 8 Fold Path (I have uploaded lessons on these). This lesson explores whether following rules/laws can help a person reduce and eventually end suffering and achieve Enlightenment. Students look at each precept and analyse and evaluate them. KS3 Lesson (can be adapted for KS4) on the Buddhist practice of Meditation. Lesson is based on ‘experiential RE’ pedagogy where students have a go at different meditation techniques and evaluate their effectiveness on a Buddhist’s journey to get rid of suffering and achieve enlightenment. KS3 Lesson (can be adapted for KS4) on the Sangha; Buddhist Monks and Nuns. Lesson explores the difference between an Ordained Buddhist and a Lay Buddhist. Then students explore deeper what a day in the life looks like for an ordained Buddhist monk. Students then evaluate how easy/difficult a life like that is to live. KS3 lesson (can be adapted for KS4) on the Hindu practice of Ahimsa. Lesson explores the value of life, what ‘non-violence’ means and looks like (in thought and actions), what are Hindu Ahimsa and non-Ahimsa acts and a DART worksheet with further knowledge of Ahimsa (exploring the how and why). KS3 Lesson (can be adapted for KS4) on the Islam practice of Zakat. Firstly explores budgeting and basic knowledge needed about Islam, for this topic. Then goes into detail on what the practice of Zakat is, why it is given, how much, when and any exemptions. The lesson then finishes with a writing task, to summarise learning. Lesson firstly explores Jesus’ teachings that express agape e.g.‘treat others how you want to be treated’ and then looks at the Christian charity ‘St Vincent De Paul Society’ and how it expresses agape.
