Primary Newspaper Bridge STEM Challenge
A hands‑on STEM challenge where learners design, build, test, and improve a newspaper bridge while exploring strength, stability, and simple engineering principles.
Learners roll or fold newspaper into beams, build a bridge across a gap, and test how many coins it can hold. This low‑prep activity is ideal for primary classrooms, home learning, STEM tubs, or small‑group centres.
WHAT’S INCLUDED:
• 3‑page STEM Challenge set: Cover Page, Instructions Page, Activity Page
• 9‑Point Engineering Graph for comparing two bridge designs
• Clear directions for classrooms
• Kid‑friendly layout for independent exploration
• Printable PDF (A4/Letter compatible)
SKILLS DEVELOPED:
• Engineering design process
• Planning and sketching a bridge
• Testing strength and stability
• Comparing performance after design changes
• Recording results using a structured 9‑point graph
HOW IT WORKS:
Learners build one version of their newspaper bridge, test its strength, and record how many coins it holds. Then they change one part of the design—such as beam thickness, support spacing, or folding method—and test again. They sketch both versions, note the change, and compare results using the 9‑Point Engineering Graph. The open layout supports drawings, notes, and observations.
The challenge scales naturally: younger learners build simple bridges, while older learners experiment with stronger beams, wider supports, and improved stability.
LEARNING CONCEPTS:
• Strength, stability, and balance
• Force and load distribution
• Testing and comparing designs
• Improving designs based on results
Curriculum Links: Supports early engineering, structure, balance, and investigations involving strength and stability.
STEM Vocabulary: beam, support, load, strength, stability, design, test, improve
Differentiation: Works well for KS1 learners and naturally extends for KS2.
TEACHER BENEFITS:
• Clear instructions
• Minimal prep with easy‑to‑source materials
• Works for small groups, centres, early finishers, or whole‑class use
• Helpful structure that supports smooth routines
• Reliable format that fits neatly into STEM rotations
PRINTING & PREP:
• Print pages single‑sided
• Provide newspaper, tape, scissors, coins, a ruler, and two books
• Adult supervision recommended when using scissors
• Test bridges in open areas away from breakables
AGE RANGE:
Suitable for ages 5–11 (Primary).
PERFECT FOR:
• STEM centres
• Classroom STEM tubs
• Early finishers
• Home learning
• After‑school clubs
• General classroom engineering time
FILE DETAILS:

STEM Challenges is a fun way to incorporate science, technology and design into your classroom. This packet focuses on STEM challenges with a Back to School theme. Each activity in this book includes step by step instructions, large challenge card with instructions, six page STEM mini-journal and a one page quick STEM page.
The STEM, STEAM or Makerspace challenges are:
Apple Schoolhouse
Sculpture Sitting on Me Block
Playground Cardboard Challenge
Student Backpack
There are two different options for your students to use to journal their STEM challenges. The first is a mini-booklet that they can make which has a half of piece of paper to work on each section of the design process. This option gives the students more room to work on the design process.
The second option is a quick STEM printable you can use which saves paper, while giving students to develop their project using design methodology.
Each option has its own benefits and you can use which one suits your needs. You can also attach both options into a stem notebook if you have one available for each student.
All artwork is original and create by myself.
