AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at where people in the UK live and the reasons for our population distribution. The starter is based on the population total for the UK and the pupils have some questions to think about. I usually do this as a discussion. There is also a can you name 15 cities starter which works well for high ability groups. We then look at cities in the UK. the pupils have a map and need to find the location of some of the major cities in the UK, we then briefly talk about their distribution. Next the pupils consider the human and physical factors that affect population distribution before putting this knowledge to work on a worksheet with several tasks and questions. We finish with GCSE-style question on human and physical factors that affect population distribution. In a nutshell lesson includes: Two starters on population and cities. This lesson is part of Our World, a Geography unit designed for students in KS1 and lower KS2 (Y1-3), but can also be taught as a stand alone lesson. It aims to help younger students understand where they live. It looks at where Earth is in the solar system and then which continent, country and place they call home. In the activity students write sentences about where they live. There are two differentiated worksheets: Easier – Students fill in cloze procedure sentences to describe where they live. Harder – Students write full sentences to describe where they live. Extension – Students sort the names of countries, continents and planets into the correct categories. “Our World and Where We Live,” encourages children to explore and appreciate their local environment and culture, and promotes understanding and empathy of others by facilitating comparison and discussion of diverse global environments and cultures. The resource includes a complete lesson plan including aims, resources, activities, assessment and homework. There is a colour disucssion sheet to introduce different aspects of where we live and the local environment. Children can colour in the black and white version of this sheet and overwrite the sentences. The next worksheet asks the children to draw and write about the different aspects and an example sheet is provided that the children can use as a reference or stimulus. *Boardmaker licenced. * The Boardmaker symbols can be a great resource for SEND students. They are a set of picture symbols used for communication with individuals who are nonverbal, have limited speech or who benefit from pictorial / visual input. They can aid in understanding and expressing ideas around the topic of Our World and where we live.

The classroom has no electricity or lighting, and is heated by a log stove that the children look after through the day. In the winter children sit in hats and gloves at their desks. There is no school uniform, and students must buy their own books, paper, and pencils for learning.
