This download includes a fully editable powerpoint with all activities, instructions, clip links and worksheets/information sheets you need. It is differentiated 2/3 ways where possible with scaffolding and challenge options and is fully planned with plenty of activities for your students to complete including a starter, all clips and related tasks, worksheet with optional roleplay, a consolidation explain written question and a plenary. The Battle of Hastings

A well presented lesson on the 1066 Battle of Hastings in the run up to the penultimate lesson of the Battle of Hastings created for KS3 history students on Microsoft Powerpoint A little about the lesson Students explore the Battle of Hastings between two of the contenders Harold Godwinson and Duke William of Normandy. Students uncover the sequence of events during the battle, they encounter a codebreaker task and look at some of the imagery of the Bayeux tapestry. Students consider advantages and disadvantages of each army throughout the lesson. Students then apply their learning to a written exam technique task. Students are guided into answering an exam style question (AQA 8 mark question) with scaffolded sentence and a mark scheme for self assessment to help them begin to understand the requirements for GCSE style questions from an early stage. This can easily be tweaked, however, to tailor the resource to your exam board. Whats included? A whole 1 hour lesson powerpoint is included (there are teacher notes also under some slides). Student worksheets/resources are included in hidden slides in the relevant points of the presentation and also as an additional Powerpoint for ease of printing. Homework, Learning Objectives and outcomes have also been completed in this resource, however, they can easily be tweaked to suit the needs and ability of your classes. It is very likely this lesson will take beyond an hour to complete depending on the ability of the class and how long is spent on each task. Battle of Hastings - 1066

The aim of this lesson is for students to analyse and evaluate the winning tactics used in by William the Conqueror in the Battle of Hastings. Students begin by analyzing the Bayeux Tapestry and what it tells us about the Battle of Hastings from a Norman point of view. Students then piece together the battle itself and information on the leadership qualities of the two combatants, William and Harold Godwinson. They then complete a differentiated task either answering questions on the Battle of Hastings or creating a storyboard to map out the events of the battle before completing a summarising pyramid on William the Conqueror’s skills. There is also a quick animation (and excellent video links) to recreate the Battle of Hastings with suggestions of whether William the Conqueror was a tactical genius or just a lucky leader. An optional homework suggestion is also provided. The resource is therefore differentiated and gives suggested teaching strategies. It comes in PowerPoint format which can be amended and edited to suit.

Claimants to the throne in 1066 - Battle of Hastings

(1)
The aim of this lesson is to assess the validity of four claimants to the English throne in 1066 before the Battles of Hastings. It also includes a script for those students who prefer a more kinaesthetic approach to this topic. Each contender is introduced and students have to assess who has the best claim to the English throne, which on the face of it is a difficult choice, which each having a strong argument and motive. This can also be completed by colour coding thermometers and rating them out of ten before making a substantiated conclusion. There are differentiated questions to ask the students once this task has been completed. The plenary asks them to think outside the box and link pictures to the issues and contentions raised. The resource is differentiated and gives suggested teaching strategies. It comes in PowerPoint format which can be amended and changed to suit.

I had the pleasure of an Ofsted recently - this lesson was praised by the inspector! Really straight forward lesson - first 5 mins was recap on previous lesson on Stamford Bridge - lots of gated questions They then watched the video - see ppt link - and I again asked questions following some feedback and thinking time. They then completed the sorting exercise - lots of peer review and thinking time - about 10 to 15 mins Once this was done they then responded to questions and then they completed the hierarchical triangle followed by the creation of a SPEEDL paragraph. This was supported by a writing frame to help the weaker learners - see the SPEEDL slide on the PPt. To cap the lesson off we did a magpie minute - students walking round and taking nice ideas from other people's work and then develop their initial paragraphs with Purple Pen. Overall a really pleasing lesson.

A power point designed to encourage historical enquiry and thinking skills. Works well with Kagan structures. All three of our KS1 classes have used it and we have been impressed with the level of thinking that it produced. We used it as 3 distinct lessons and got the children to vote for who they thought would make the best king and who they thought would have the best chance of winning the Battle of Hastings. We also did a mock Battle of Hastings using the hill on the school field and the children chose which side they wanted to be on whilst I narrated the story. Updated 5.6.2015 to include differentiated worksheets to go with the powerpoint.
