The Black Death: What was the Black Death?

(0)
Key Stage 3 lesson on the Black Death. In this lesson which is approximately 1 hour, we introduce the disease, the symptoms and practice some source interpretation as well. We start with an enquiry mystery around uncovering a plague pit where the pupils are given more and more information to try to work out what the story behind the burials might be. We then introduce the disease, its origins and how it is transmitted through watching a film clip. We then create an annotated diagram around the outline of a body. The pupils will listen to the symptoms of the Black Death at various stages throughout the illness of a victim. The slides have sound effects that the pupils always enjoy. We then look at a source from medieval times and the pupils answer the question about the sources usefulness. This is supported with a writing frame and some ideas to help the pupils. We then finish by playing the game “would you have survived the plague?”. Here the pupils choose numbers that correspond to actions a medieval person may take to help them avoid catching the plague. Some work and some don’t. In a nutshell included in the lesson is: Time team investigation starter around uncovering a plague pit Video clip on the origins of the plague and symptoms Annotated diagram task around the symptoms Source task for extended writing with writing frame “Would you survive the plague?” Bingo. Hope this saves you valuable planning time. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/markthegeographer

Black Death

Norman Conquest The aim of this lesson is to assess how scary the Black Death was in1348. Students are introduced to the idea of why the Black Death was so scary, learning about the symptoms of the Bubonic Plague and Pneumonic Plague and the devastation that lay in its wake from empty villages today to paintings showing devastation and death. They learn key words such as contagion, flagellants, humours and miasmas and how these words link to the learning objective through a thinking quilt. They will also find out how the peasants gained in status as a result of the reduction of the workforce and how this gave them more bargaining power with their landlords over wages. The plenary is a Black Death connecting wall which requires students to link four key phrases and to explain how and why they link together. This lesson is therefore designed to be interactive, fun, challenging and engaging and could be used over two lessons. The lesson is enquiry based with a key question using a lightbulb posed at the start of the lesson and revisited at the end using a rate ‘o’ meter to show the progress of learning. The resource is differentiated and gives suggested teaching strategies. It comes in PowerPoint format which can be amended and changed to suit.

KS3 Medieval - Consequences of the Black Death

(0)
This lesson contains: A starter to get students talking about why diseases spread, and then hopefully they will apply that to this lesson about the Black Death. A background info slide about the spread of the plague. Students then use on-board images to discuss what actually caused the spread. There is a gap fill exercise which can be completed to consolidate the knowledge. An on-board discussion about how people attempted to stop the plague. Students are asked to complete a small, optional sheet (it could just be a discussion, up to you) with each, matching them with the associate image, then decide the the one that they think would work the most, and which would not. A few slides with sources about the impact the plague had on England. Students read and discuss what they think each author is saying about the impact. A card-sort activity where students are given lots of small statements about the plague and they have to separate them into positive and negatives. Then they choose the 3-4 best the write about in their books. This can then be extended into a writing task to make a judgement about whether the Black Death was terrible for everyone.
