Open Evening Activities - Psychology

If you’ve got an open evening coming up you might be wondering how to prepare or what you could offer to those prospective parents. You might already have some resources and be looking for extra activities to put out. Here is my pack of open evening resources, which I’ve used for years. They always help me ensure prospective students are persuaded to take psychology. I’ve included the resources i use for Sociology too as I know many people teach both but these are easily deleted if you don’t need them. Similarly you may need to change a year 2 module or two, if you don’t study the same three as our students do. In the bundle is: My door signs Six interactive activities to put around your classroom (this always gives the room a real buzz and helps keep visitors interested and busy while they wait to speak to the teacher.) A rolling ppt to put on the board for prospective parents and students to read. (you could amend this to add your dept results / entry requirements). As a teacher of over 10 years at an outstanding school, (who has examined and tutored), I have spent time compiling exactly the resources students need to excel in their exams. Now I want to pass these on to you. Whether you are a teacher or student these will help you get ready for the exams.

Y6 Open Evening Geography Activity

A tried and tested(!) powerpoint that contains a range of activities including a world knowledge quiz and an interactive ‘map-the-world’ task that students can gradually add to as they move in and out of the classroom over the course of the evening. The powerpoint slides contain lots of little sheets (e.g. flags, animals, boxes to write capital cities, mountain ranges, rivers etc) that can be printed out for students to colour and add information to, and then pin onto a larger world map to make a colourful display. A large map and atlases are required to carry this out. This has worked really successfully as a way to engage students and talk to them about geography, and create something visually-exciting and meaningful.

Includes a couple of resources I use on open evenings for promoting Psychology. Serial Killer or Psychologist - I made these into cards with a photo on the front and descroption of who the person is on the back them laminated them. The idea is that the students have to sort the cards into two piles based on appearance alone. I then discuss things like lombroso theory, nature nuture of offending, biological causes (because if there are similarities in faces of criminals it could mean similarities in DNA etc), and offender profiling with them. True or false statements - I put these in a jar and they pull out one and we discuss it. A display poster of the topics we cover Interesting Conditions - just some more unusual conditions that can be discussed A mirror task shapes - if you buy a couple of small mirrors (the small mirror tiles work well from Ikea) then the students have to do the mirror task done by HM. Draw a line in the small 1cm gap between the lines of the shapes by only looking in the mirror. I do this by blocking their vision to their hand using another sheet of paper (or can use a card board box cut out.

Name The Disney Movie and Rate Its Historical Accuracy! Bring history to life in your classroom with this engaging and interactive activity that combines the magic of Disney with critical thinking about historical events! This resource invites students to test their knowledge of Disney movies based on historical events and then dive deeper into discussions about historical accuracy. Through a fun and educational game, students will: Guess the Disney Movie: Each team is presented with a short description of a movie. Using clues from the description, teams must guess which Disney film is being referenced. Rate the Historical Accuracy: Once the movie is revealed, students discuss how historically accurate they think the movie is on a scale from 1 (Not Accurate) to 5 (Highly Accurate). This opens up a lively discussion about what really happened versus how Disney portrays it, helping students to differentiate between entertainment and historical fact. Detailed Instructions: Easy-to-follow guidelines for setting up and facilitating the activity. Printable Scoring Sheet: Ready-to-use for teams to record their guesses and ratings.
