Here are a set of powerpoints and activities for adding the suffixes -ment, -ness, -ful, -less and -ly. These can be used with Y2 children or Y3 to Y6 as revision of the rules and with activites that can be used as evidence of being able to spell these endings independently to compliment evidence gathered from their independent writing.
Suffix display cards for the new curriculum. Can be used for working wall or English display. There are 14 different cards for each suffix. Contains suffixes that are expected to be used at Year 2.
Children are presented with 7 words to add the different suffixes to, with an example given at the top of the page. We have used these sheets in guided reading as an activity for an independent group to complete on whiteboards, supporting them to revise their use of these suffixes.

Animated & illustrated PowerPoint introduction to prefixes and suffixes and how they change the meaning of (base) words.
Most common prefixes and suffixes covered.
Each prefix or suffix is presented with 10+ logical examples in an engaging style. Think-pair-share activities for each prefix or suffix.
Slide Order:
Review of base words quickly covered with an identify the base word activity.
Explanation and examples of common prefixes: ‘re’, ‘un’, ‘mis’, ‘pre’, and ‘dis’.
Each prefix then followed with a think-pair-share activity.
20+ examples of words with the prefix then shown for students to self check against.
Explanation and examples of common suffixes: ‘-ful’, ‘-less’, ‘ly’, ‘er’, ‘est’
Each suffix followed with a think-pair-share activity
20+ Examples of words with the suffix.
Quite a long slide show if all done at once (whole lesson perhaps). Could be used to introduce/review just prefixes or suffixes in one lesson by showing only 1 half of the presentation. Some slides could also be hidden.
Other than a brief explanation and examples for each prefix or suffix, I’ve tried to keep it quite straight forward so that their isn’t too much lecturing or reading required.
Recommend students use mini-whiteboards for the think-pair-shares or list on paper the examples pairs or small groups can come up with.
Been designed with ESL grade 3, 4 and 5 students as the target pupils, so repetitive language used with vocabulary building as a desired outcome.

Suffix Word Wall: This is an illustrated Suffix word wall. Each suffix word card has a matching picture with its meaning in brackets. It can be used as headers for doing ‘suffix of the day’ focus walls or it can be used as a stand alone word wall. Each page has three word cards and they are to be printed on 8.5” x 11” (letter) sized paper. This file incorporates simple definitions and examples of common suffixes. Suffixes are tricky for English Language Learners but the illustrations are a huge help for getting students to make connections to each suffix and its real world applications and meaning. You can also use this set to make a bulletin board of suffixes.
Thirty-six (36) of the most commonly used suffixes are used in these cards: ous, ory, ly, ling, el, fy, ant, able, ible, ness, ess, ment, er, less, ence, ive, eer, ier, et, or, ism, ship, hood, ful, dom, ist, en, sion, ish, al(1), acy, al(2), ate, tion, ical, and esque.

These cards are created in two different sizes. The original set has 8 cards per page and the larger set has 4 cards per page. The small set will save you ink and paper but many teachers have indicated to me that they preferred to have a larger set to make a bulletin board display. So, that's why I added the larger version.
