Developing Metaphors, Similes and Personification

I developed this lesson for a Y9 class who were preparing for the English Controlled Assessment 'Soundtrack of my Life'. They were a class of 28 boys who found generating literary devices quite difficult and so I broke them up into teams of three/four and assigned key-roles to each student. The only thing missing from this lesson is the starter activity which I can't seem to find anywhere! (Sorry). This lesson can be developed/changed to suit KS3 or KS4 and is fully differentiated. All you&'ll need to add is the role-badges (I used sticky labels). Enjoy.

AQA GCSE Lit Quote Pack - Revision

I made this last year and my students (whole-school Y11) found it very useful (I hope that yours will, too!). This pack contains quotes/information on: * Macbeth * An Inspector Calls * The Love and Relationships Cluster * (There's a blank template for 19th Century Novel notes)

Planning a Descriptive Response to AQA English Paper 1, Question 5

What follows is a pack of four images; each image has three planning slides for students to use in order to build their creative writing skills. All of the slides are editable (aside from the few graphics I’ve borrowed from the internet under “fair-use” guidelines) so you can change/amend them as you like.

Spelling Square Challenge

This is a ten-slide ppt. where I’ve placed grids of letters (each grid-square is a text box so you can change the letters whenever you like) and a suggested goal of how many letters the students need to use to form words. I think this is a suitable starter for all ages as you can make it as challenging or relaxed as you please; it’s simple, effective and can be really fun if you have a competitive class!

19th Century Context Warm-Up Activities

This ppt. contains a range of quizzes and small, warm-up tasks to help GCSE English Language Paper 2 students in their study of the Victorian Era as Source B’s contexts can be quite difficult for many to grasp if they haven’t covered this Era in “History/Humanities” class. This is a resource for older students as it covers racism/racist themes, unethical practices (in context) and similar materials which may be too mature for anyone under 14. For the more hard-hitting activities (the final Taboo Quiz), I have added a range of suggested discussion points that you might wish to use. This could also be used by GCSE History Teachers; all websites used for information have been cited.

Introduction to Media and Representation

As the title suggests, this forty-five minute lesson might be useful for any Media BTECs or as an introduction (for KS3/KS4) to what representation is/means. It focuses on McDonald’s and could be used with the award winning documentary “Supersize Me”.

AQA GCSE English Language Question 5 Planning Homework Sheet

I’ve created this planning sheet to assist/support my lower-band students; many don’t see the value of planning and their mind-maps can often become disjointed, however, this ‘boxed off’ strategy seems to be working better! This is a Word Document which can be edited in terms of which creative/descriptive elements you want them to focus on. I’ve left the questions/which medium they’re writing for blank on this template but I would write a specific question and discuss the medium (i.e. magazine, creative writing website, etc.) when setting it.

This is a quiz I’ve knocked together with a ‘bonus’ proof reading activity where you can award a prize/incentive. It’s a word document and so you can edit it as you need/want to! There are 13 questions in total with multiple choice responses; the correct answers are also attached on a second page.

Representation and Media Impact

This powerpoint contains video clips which may not be suitable for all learners (some cover body dysmorphia, eating disorders and other mental health issues) and so I strongly advise that you watch them before showing to a class (they are age appropriate, however). Again, this lesson may be useful for Media BTEC or a lesson reviewing cultural trends/the harm that representation can cause.

AQA GCSE English Language and Literature Assessment Record Sheets

These are a “front-sheet” I developed for my staff to use when covering the questions across all four papers as a way to cut down lengthy marking processes; ideally, a member of staff would annotate the students responses and, upon reading that feedback, the students would fill in this sheet. We found that having “banned” words/statements on the board was helpful and, for more higher ability students, we would ask them to cite which part of the teacher’s comments had prompted their written response. We covered Macbeth and An Inspector Calls, however, these sheets can be easily altered to use with any of the texts. You could also change the "next steps" section into a re-drfating activity and, instead of 'what went well' and 'even better if', you could give them other goals/targets or tasks.

AQA GCSE English Language Paper 1 Question 5 Computer Room Lesson

On the rare occasions that I could book a computer room, I liked to give my higher ability students the opportunity to use their superior typing skills for this 40 mark question. This lesson has been designed to share with the students/for them to be able to access and fill in PPT. slides themselves; however, it can be easily adapted to use as a regular teaching tool. The two tasks are ‘sci-fi’ and offer the students a range of chunked down tasks to plan for either a narrative or descriptive writing response.
