Writing for Real Audiences (Non-Fiction)

(1)
A scheme created for mid to high ability Yr7s. This covers the writing types: Inform, explain, advise, persuade and argue. It also includes a lesson on the features of a newspaper with a view to students creating their own school newspaper as an extended home learning project. When trialed we found that each writing type took 2 x 1 hour lessons. This scheme does not include DIRT lessons, although we did add some in. There is, however, self and peer assessment opportunities throughout. Please check the notes section of the PowerPoints for web addresses of videos and extra teacher information. Any questions, please ask. Enjoy.

This was created for a low ability Y8 class to encourage them to think about creating and writing about characters. It is preparation for their Y8 exam which is based around an AQA Paper 1 Section B task. This lesson uses group work and timed tasks and can be adapted for any creative writing scheme/ lesson or any character study activity. There are challenges and super challenges to extend student learning and the lesson has a Big Question, which I use instead of Learning Objectives. there are also differentiated success criteria using Bloom's Revised Taxonomy to explore different levels of success. My class loved this, I hope yours does too.

Students, as trainee agents, investigate the rules of capital letters, correcting errors and writing their own examples of the rules in action. An enjoyable way to look at grammar, with opportunity for some teacher in role (as the lead agent!). Great for encouraging boys to engage with aspects of language. Part of a series of literacy lessons - look out for more on commas, apostrophes, sentence structures etc! Suitable for year 7 or low ability year 8.
