Differentiated Jamaica Inn Exam Paper

(1)
I have used the Jamaica Inn text but broken this down into sections and set alternative reading questions. The questions are Functional Skills type. Students can sit this paper whilst others in the same class can sit the original Jamaica Inn Paper 1 paper. This is the reading section only but I have added a writing task on the end in case students finish earlier than the rest of the class.

PIVATS audit sheet

(1)
I created the PIVATS audit tables ready for September. These are the PIVATS milestones for reading, writing, speaking and listening. I intend to use it at the start of term then throughout the academic year to track progress. I will also select the relevant tables to attach to assessments to highlight where they are at. Quickly identifies what they have achieved and what they need to do. Font is very small so each table fits on one page but can easily be changed. I print these on A3 to wrap around assessment pieces. I use the A4 smaller version inside individual student files.

A reading exam based on an extract from the novel Private Peaceful. This exam paper mimics the 8700 AQA language exam style questions from paper 1 section A. This can be delivered without students having studied the novel. I use this as a weekly assessment. I give them questions 1-2, then question 3 then question 4 so I can assess their ability to deal with the AOs and the exam style questions. Suitable for year 7 or 8 students depending on their ability.

SEN Modified 8700 English Language Paper 2

I have taken the AQA provisional year 8 exam paper 2 and modified it for use with SEN GCSE students. This sticks closely to the original questions but breaks them down into smaller parts. Students can complete the answers in table form most of the time. The original source has also been modified to make it easier to understand for weaker readers. The paper will also suit lower ability year 8 readers and can be used alongside the original exam paper as a differentiated assessment.

Feedback from my tutor group was very positive.

8700 AQA Paper 1 Section A marking feedback sheets

I made these sheets after I got fed up writing the same comments on the students' work after each mini assessment. Now I highlight the sheet to show why there were awarded the mark for each question. The students stick these into their books then use the band above where they achieved to set themselves targets for next time. The grids are generic so can be used for any Paper 1 Section A style assessment. They are typed in the dyslexic font to support students who are at risk of dyslexia. This has saved me a huge amount of marking time!

A full lesson with formal lesson plan. Covers the following topics briefly: formal and informal, adventurous vocabulary, structure and organisation all linked to formal letter writing. I used this as an introduction to gauge how much a new class knew and what I needed to work on. Could easily be extended to cover two lessons, giving them more time to write their own formal letter. Fully differentiated for both G&T and SEN. A ready-made 'observation lesson'.

Introducing SEN to AQA paper 1 question 1

I have an extremely low ability class but school wants them entered for GCSE English Language. The sheets attached helped me to introduce them to the first question on the AQA paper 1 and understand what the question wants them to do. This could be used with other year groups too. By using a simplified source on Armed Forces Day, the students were able to build their confidence by answering the two questions (found on the second sheet of the source so remember to scroll down!). They all got 4/4 and feel ready to tackle a longer source now. More to follow when I've created other approaches!
