The whole book has been abridged to allow it to be accessed by EAL pupils working in a mainstream classroom. The plot line is kept but the more obscure vocabulary has been simplified. After each chapter there are comprehension/language awareness activities. It can be used in a number of ways: - at home prior to class in preparation for reading the original version in the lesson - homework: extra reading practice - to be worked through with specialist EAL teacher in withdrawal situations -etc etc

This activity aims to reinforce/review eight characters from the play. It involves students introducing themselves as a Macbeth character to a partner in a pair using information from a card they have been given. Then as a group of four, they introduce their partner to another pair. Students can then write a report on what they have found out about the 4 characters from their group. The activity can be repeated with the other 4 character cards at some stage. -Full instructions are on the rules download. The cards should be of different colours- the rules sheet gives the ones I used as examples. -The 'multiple copies' download is better for those doing class sets. Each of the 4 pages should be on a different colour

A group activity for 4 members. You need to print both documents. -Three members each have a different reading which gives some of the reasons. -The fourth member has a list of questions that he/she can read and try to answer in their heads while the others are reading their pieces . -When the readers have finished the questioner asks the questions on the sheet. Each answer will have been in one of the readings so someone should know the anser to each question. -The questioner writes down the ansers on the sheet. -When completed, the sheet can then form a writing plan for an essay based on the title of the activity. This is a great way for students to produce written pieces based on speaking activities. I have produced this one based on an idea from www.collaborativelearning.org. There are lots of other examples from all subject areas on this website.

The first of a series of texts to develop the skill of paraphrasing. Short Reuters Press stories have been used. An adapted version (version 2) is added for EAL students, and this may also be useful for those with SEN. Illustrations are also included for the benefit of these students. The activity involves students underlining the important content from the text, and then rephrasing them to produce a paraphrased version. A completed paraphrased version is included for use in the plenary.

There are two sheets: one presents 9 arguments for increasing the population of Australia and the other presents those for reducing it. The arguments are numbered and those sharing the same number are counter- arguments. Students should do the activity in pairs. They would first look at the two 'number 1' arguments. they would discuss their relative merits and then share 5 marks between them. (e.g. if the 'for' argument is strongly supported, but the 'against' argument has some merit, they might give 4 to the former and 1 to the latter) At the end of the exercise they will add up the total number of marks for each side (remember, the total of the two sides should be 45). By the end of the activity the students will have reached a conclusion and have a range of arguments they could use in a written analysis of the question.
