A free IB DP Physics skill pack on SI base and derived units (SL and HL, first assessment 2025): a rules reference, four worked examples and 56 answered practice items. Free means the whole pack, nothing held back.

The syllabus assumes this technique but no topic owns it: the IB asks for it to be practised inside the topics that need it, so this is a supplement to integrated teaching, not a taught unit.

This pack is worked, not taught: the teaching duration shown is student working time across the practice bank, about 145 minutes, not classroom delivery time. It splits into two sittings, about 80 minutes then 65.

What students learn:

  • The seven base quantities and units, and what makes a quantity derived rather than base
  • Building a named unit from its defining equation, resolving any named unit on the right first: a pascal takes two rounds, an ohm four
  • Writing a unit the booklet’s way: negative indices rather than a solidus, and the space that makes m s^-1 a speed and ms^-1 a per-millisecond
  • Checking an equation for homogeneity, and what it cannot catch: a pure number, a sign, or two quantities sharing a base-unit form
  • Non-SI units (eV, ly, pc, h, day, year, degrees Celsius), and which conversions the booklet supplies

Three tiers: A, 38 fluency items in six sets; B, 12 applied parts where a named or non-SI unit must be handled first; C, four multiple-choice items, every distractor explained, and two structured questions worth 17 marks.

IB skills (Tool 3: Mathematics): taught are fundamental units, derived units in terms of SI units, checking an expression using dimensional analysis of units, non-SI units, and the symbols stated in the guide and the data booklet. Practised: arithmetic and algebra.

What’s included:

  • Student Worksheet, 18 pages, answers stripped out, colour and B&W
  • Teacher Key, 29 pages, every answer and solution, plus teaching notes
  • The editable worksheet, a self-contained HTML file

Worksheet and key are two projections of one source, so no answer file can drift. Grades 11-12 (ages 16-19).

Bundle

IB DP Physics (2025) IA and Paper 1B Skills Bundle

IB DP Physics skills bundle for the internal assessment and Paper 1B, SL and HL, first assessment 2025: nine skill packs, 30% off buying them separately. The internal assessment is 24 marks and 20% of the course; Paper 1B is the data-based questions, 20 marks at SL and at HL. This bundle is one investigation, design to evaluation. **What's in the bundle, in working order** - Designing the Investigation: research question, variables, method, safety (IA Criterion 1) - Significant Figures and Rounding: the number to the right figures (free) - The Units of a Quantity: SI base and derived units, homogeneity checks (free) - Uncertainties: recording a range, propagating it, percentage error - Tables, Charts and Graphs: the results table, the plot, the line of best fit - Proportionality and Scaling: the relationship read off the data, power known - Log Scales and Power Laws: logarithmic axes, the power off a log-log gradient - Uncertainties on a Graph: bars, extreme lines, gradient and intercept uncertainty - Concluding and Evaluating: the conclusion and the evaluation (IA Criteria 3 and 4) Between them the nine reach all four IA criteria: Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation. Log Scales and Power Laws takes the case Proportionality and Scaling stops short of: the exponent is unknown. Exponential decay is left to the topics that own it. **What this bundle is, and what it is not** The IB asks these skills to be practised inside the topics that need them, so no pack here is a taught unit of the course: it is reference, remedial and revision material that supplements integrated teaching. The packs are worked, not taught: the 35.5 hours across the nine is student working time, not classroom delivery time. Every pack carries a student worksheet with the answers stripped out, a teacher key with every item answered from the same source so no answer file can drift, and the editable worksheet as a self-contained HTML file, in colour and black-and-white PDF. 286 student pages and 401 teacher pages across the nine. IB skills in the study of physics, mostly Tool 3: Mathematics with Inquiry 1, 2 and 3: significant figures, SI units, uncertainty propagation, plotting and best-fit lines, linearizing, logarithmic scales, extreme gradients, methodology and safety, concluding and evaluating. Every pack opens in any browser, nothing to install. SI units, IB notation and IB command terms throughout. Two of the nine are free, so a pack can be worked before buying. Grades 11-12 (ages 16-19). **Also in the catalogue, sold separately:** - [Measuring the Acceleration of Free Fall, a worked investigation to practise on (free)](https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/-13516788) - [Unit Conversion, raw readings into SI before processing (free)](https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/resource-13537341) *A rating helps other teachers find this.*
